Hello everyone, sorry for all the confusion. My mother was very sick last week, so my time online has been next to nil. In addition, I've started looking for a new job. So, I've been rather burned out :-/
I did get erstazi's original PM on March 18 "Server is down". I addressed tht issue about an hour or two afterward, and assumed it was resolved. However, looking back at that message, I see it was edited a day later. Since the forums don't notify me of edits, I had no idea a different problem had transpired.
In a nutshell, here's what happened. Last Monday morning, I completed work on an experimental patch for the network protocol handler, seemingly capable of detecting and declining requests from a certain unofficial ad-ridden client. When the server crashed mid-day, I was in the midst of deploying that update. My plan was to perform a 1-2 hour long test, by only permitting connections based on the specific client signature, and then inverting the ruleset afterward (there was no other way to test such a feature, except on the production server).
Since I was called away from home later that day to help my mother, I didn't get around to overseeing the test itself. I completely forgot to restore the correct ruleset when restarting the server. And I mistakenly assumed everything was working fine, since I didn't get any new PMs. So basically, a mountain of errors on my part!
I'm in the process of rolling back all the changes now, and will likely abandon any kind of restrictive network-based filtering for the time being. At least the good news is that the world and all player data is perfectly in tact. Nothing has been lost. My apologies for the delay, and the lack of attention to this matter.
I miss seeing all of you!
