How to setup on a hosted server?

How to setup on a hosted server?

Postby EPROM1 » Sun Apr 07, 2019 1:34 am

I'm new so Hi to all.
What an amazing game engine! Thanks to all those who created it.

Now on to my question.
I would like to install minetest on to my hosted server. I have looked at the wiki but as far as I can see it only explains how to install onto a local pc.

My server is linux based and has 500mg of ram.
Its a paid for server and has quite good spec, and my host has agreed to allow me to install minetest :-)

1. On the minetest download page there are many versions, so which version should I download for my server?

2. I assume I would only require the minetest server?

3. Is there a config file I could run on the server to instal minetest?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

I've been poking and prodding some of the lua files, still getting my head around it all, but hope to contribute with a mod or two soon.

Many thanks

I don't know - or not another ... but
* depending on the system on the server
* just use build in minetest via "sudo apt install minetestserver" and make sure get 5.x version, otherwise you build up on old 0.4.x version, and sure will die some day
* yes, only server
* the minetest.conf is very important to fill and check as changes after damage world, or better when sure that config is nice (like worldgen chosen) reset world

* do not announce server at beginning ! - only you as admin and testing player get in and check - even this might take a month to be sure all is running as then the chosen [Mod]s

read about:
* folders for minetest.conf, world.mt, and mods ...
* learn to love and read minetest.log !!!

and most easy and saving time might be same system at home and test there, as saving uploading times also maybe

Usually servers run on Linux and most Linux distributions have Minetest in their repositories. SO ideally you don’t manually load/install Minetest on servers but simply get the version from your server’s distribution’s repository. For distributions that only ship outdated packages for “stability reasons” custom repositories exist for example there is a PPA for Ubuntu.

Yes, you do not need the client when installing on a server. You need some of the Xorg libraries to compile it, though.

Don’t fall for the one-line script for “installing” self-compiled Minetest that is posted on the forums every now and then. For doing it properly just fetch the code and run ./configure. The build system will tell you what’s missing. Search the missing names via your distribution’s package manager’ search functionality.
