per-instance mapgen settings

per-instance mapgen settings

Postby uwu » Tue Apr 09, 2019 4:46 pm

The minetest package on my distro and probably others too is configured to allow running multiple instances of minetest with different minetest@[instance].service files.

Is it possible to have different mapgen settings in these instances? Because as I understand it, minetest.conf is a global config file for all worlds.

The minetest.conf mapgen setting just set the default settings when creating a world. The settings are then fixed for the world once created. Ie: changing mapgen settings in minetest.conf won't affect existing worlds.

The mapgen settings for a particular world can be found in world.mt

sigh,
I still dream of being able to assign different mapgens, be it builtin or mod-provided, to defined reagions of a map with pleasing border regions between them.
Imagine a spawn area island in the center made by mgflat and then in the four quadrants regions displaying mg5, Valleys, mg7 and mg-fractal. Each seperated maybe by Water or rugged mountains or lava canyons or...
aaaand then add stacked realms to that with yet again multiple mapgens according to region ....
aaaand maybe different game modes per stack level.

I would never need to leave the map to see all the wonders ...

I might never leave the game again ...

rubenwardy is correct, except for this:

> The mapgen settings for a particular world can be found in world.mt

Actually in 'map_meta.txt' in the world folder.

I have tried using different mapgens (mg_tectonic and mgv6) in one map but result in discontinuity. There were some blocks missing and became deep trench, everything is dark in the area as one mapgen uses nolight parameters. Maybe i incorrectly applied those mapgen.
