Default Grid Texture Pack [default_grid]

Default Grid Texture Pack [default_grid]

Postby kestral » Wed Mar 13, 2019 6:26 pm

I decided to play around with texture packs and here's what I came up with.

Default Grid Texture Pack [default_grid]

Image

Adds a grid overlay to the Minetest Game 5.0 default textures.

  • Places grid over a large selection of default nodes. (Currently 239 different nodes supported, although more than half are stairs.)
  • Note however that I have intentionally omitted trees, plants, liquids, tools, and irregular shapes like fences and ladders.
  • Grid overlays are drawn at 32px for a finer grid, which means default textures will be scaled to 32px.
  • Very small, uses override.txt and only a half-dozen grid image files.

By the way, does anyone happen to know what character to use for comments in these override.txt files?

edited:
  • Renamed to default_grid.
  • Fixed texture license, so it now matches Minetest game.
  • The bulk of this texture pack is in the override.txt file, which is 828 lines of text that maps my six new grid textures onto the normal, previously existing minetest game textures. This file is clearly not textures, but is it code? Just in case, I've added a LGPL-2.1 code license, which also matches Minetest game.

I had to change the name, so it is now default_grid.

Git repo and link above have both been changed.

Interesting observation:

If you'd like to have a grid while using another texture pack, all you need to do is place a copy of (or link to) the other texture pack in the default_grid directory, and select default_grid as the texture to use.

Note that the grid will still only be applied to the default, farming, stairs, and wool nodes currently supported by default_grid.

This works because default_grid doesn't actually supply any default_* textures—it just used the system ones. However, any textures placed in the default_grid directory will override the system ones. Minetest will also autoscale to the largest texture, so resolution of texture packs shouldn't matter either. However, I wouldn't try putting in more than one other texture pack there at the same time.

Here is an example showing some of the texture packs that default_grid can place a grid over, based on the previous post:
